Well, finally the dude who made Democracy actually asked the pirates! Here's the response - and much of the conversation can be followed here, here, and here, too.
A few things worth noting:
1) If you want to know why people do something, it makes sense to ask them, even though sometimes they don't know and wouldn't tell you anyway.
2) Intellectual property is a funny thing. It's hard to argue that ideas are ever truly original, and they're impossible to control once they're out in the universe anyway. Look at the fiasco that happened with the telephone! [A patent doesn't equal an original idea!]
3) Gamers are rule-testers by nature. That's why we like to play games! Why would we follow such a stupid and expensive rule if we don't have to? It's like NOT cheating in Monopoly. [Check the official, in-the-box rules next time you play. Guaranteed that your 'house rules' aren't according to Hoyle.]
[Also, the fact that Hasbro calls Monoploy a kids game is HILARIOUS. And the fact that copies of Hoyle's Short Treatise on the Game of Whist circulated many pirated copies...I CAN'T make this shit up!]
best when viewed in low light
